A refreshing take on a DC hero

Aquaman is DC Films’ latest entry into their cinematic universe, and in my opinion it’s one of their best to date. The film is reasonably exciting, with an interesting enough story and characters to keep viewers hooked. It also benefited from having the talented Jason Mamoa in its starring role. After watching this movie I’m convinced he was the perfect actor for the part, and he did an excellent job portraying the tough yet comedic Aquaman.
Most of all, though, this film feels fun. And that’s so important because it’s something DC has been sorely lacking. I believe one of the recurring problems with DC Films’ movies is that they simply take themselves too seriously. The movies have used a dark, overly serious ad nauseam, and I think audiences were ready to see a film in the DC universe with more of a sense of humor. And clearly this was the case, as the film has done quite well at the box office.
Where I think Aquaman fell short was in its somewhat engaging but rather generic story of “the true king” fighting the “evil king” to take his rightful place. While the dazzling action scenes may have been fun to watch, the movie was unfortunately fairly predictable. I was also not particularly impressed with the film’s main villain, Orm, who felt mostly two-dimensional to me.
Ultimately I would rate this film 7.5/10. While it was slightly generic and had its faults, the movie was also a big improvement on the usual DC formula and developed Aquaman’s character well while helping break the tradition of overly dark DC films.
